Diablo: Shaper of the Modern Action RPG

By: Sean

There was a time when I sought to conquer my demons. Then I started playing Diablo. If you have not heard of Diablo or its sequel Diablo 2 you must have lived in a seminary. Diablo and Diablo 2 are what made PC Role Playing Games worthy of existing.

Without Diablo you have no World of Warcraft. Almost all the concepts of WoW are taken from the Diablo series. Looting monsters, hacking and slashing your way through Church, Dungeon, Cave, and finally Hell. You can't disagree, there is just no convincing anyone that PC Gaming would have gone where it went without the game. Battle.net, the dedicated servers that still host Diablo and Diablo 2, spawned the idea that made it affordable to play online (see: free). It became a legend in the gaming community.
Imagine what would exist without it. Counter Strike? Nope. Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic? No. So just remember you'd be living in single player Hell or “LANing” for the rest of existence. Remember, WoW whores, you may enjoy your level 80 Death Knight but that Death Knight would not be there without the Lord of Terror being blown apart by a hacked Staff of Apocalypse.

Those that share the memory of starting in a small rustic ghost town, and that first conversation with the Connery-sounding Griswald will never forget getting Griswald's Edge for the first time. You know how painful it was when you had open a town portal and had no gold left. You remembered those bastard Player Killers who sniped you at Hell Level 1. You remember playing with your friends and attempting to work together to get to Hell in the quickest way possible. You also remember loot whoring every piece of crap that dropped no matter what it was.

The most important part, though, was when you actually vanquished Diablo you smiled and waited for the cutscene. You thought you were finished but there was a lot more loot to be had. Once you completed all difficulty levels and finally reached 99 with all of your characters you were finally satisfied.
World of Warcraft was released in Fall of 2004. You forgot all about the four Demons that once ruled RP Gaming. This is a friendly reminder those four Demons are coming back. And they will kill you.
