Modern Warfare 2: The Shooter With an MMO Appeal

By: Snake2003

Before the World of Warcraft army lynches me and hangs me from a tree let me just set the record straight: I’m not comparing Modern Warfare 2 and WoW, so put your pitchforks away. What I will say though is that if you’re a fan of MMOs chances are you might like MW2.

All the RPG elements are there in the game: Get a weapon, level up, unlock cool stuff and continue to kill people faster because your gear is better. You get to play an RPG, flaunt your e-peen but at the same time have the feel of a first person shooter.

Before I tried MW2 I wasn’t a huge fan of shooters. Hell, after Counterstrike I was just sick of them. They all seemed the same. Pick your weapon, shoot, kill some people, plant a bomb then win or lose. The games became stale quickly and of course there were cheaters abound.

After some bitching and complaining from my friends that I should get MW2 I decided what the hell, why not. I was blown away. The story is top notch and has some things that are just plain disturbing. I won’t tell you what they are but as a gamer since I was a kid this is the first game that has ever surprised me. There are lots of twists and turns and hair rising moments in the story. It definitely delivers there.

Some of you are probably thinking “It’s a shooter I don’t play it for the fucking story, I want multiplayer.” For you multiplayer fan-boys there are plenty of that too. With around 60 levels (from private to a four star general) and many different guns, add-ons and other “perks” to choose from you can customize your class so much that no two people are the same. You even get to pick the color and style of your camouflage was well.

If you’re a fan of MMOs and want a change of pace for once, pick up MW2. You’ll love the story and the multiplayer is really fun. Just don’t get too frustrated if you realize that MMOs have slowed your reaction times down some. You’ll get used to it eventually and have some fun!
